There is no reason to name an icon 'favicon.ico' unless you place that icon in the root directory.

Taking a look at some of the BIGGEST in IT business shows their thought of the 'favicon.ico' naming and placement.

By viewing the HTML code it can be seen that there is NO link to the 'favicon.ico'.
