The fact that a websites icon is automatically added to HTML, images, pdf's and flash/swf when a user views that item adds to the look and feel of the site.

It's really easy. Just name the icon favicon.ico and place that image into the sites root directory. DONE (NO CODING NEEDED) :-}

Here is the web app I use to convert my .png images into .ico images.

PS: When you save the ICON put the (.ico) in the filename, the app does not do it for you.

PSS: By setting the sizes to 16x16, 32x32, and 64x64 pixels allows use of the icon as a desktop usable icon. If icons are saved as 16x16 pixels only, the desktop icon, generally 48x48 pixels zooms in on the 16x16 pixels and it does not look good.

I would like to add that there is a plugin for Photoshop as well. This plugin gives Photoshop the ability to directly Open and Save Windows icon (.ICO) files.
