New life for dead photos

Talitha Hilderbrand's picture

After a photo is printed in a newspaper, it goes into the "morgue file" to be kept for reference. This website borrows the name, but not the photos.

morgueFile is a public image archive full of professional stock photos. Any of these pictures can be downloaded and modified for personal or commercial use.

Most stock photo services charge hefty fees for royalties. But morgueFile images are available free of charge without attribution (although you can credit the photographer to be nice).

As long as you don't claim ownership or sell an image in its original state, you can use these sharp-looking shots to your heart's content.

Note: Like YouTube, all the content on morgueFile is user uploaded. If you have a question about a photo or want to make sure the uploader has a model release form, contact the uploader directly. Also, just because a photo is free on morgueFile doesn't mean its subject is usable in all situations. You wouldn't use the photo of a corporate logo in a commercial work, for example.
