EZ Mask is an interactive image masking tool for Adobe Photoshop. In addition to EZ Mask, Digital Film Tools offers plug-ins for many Adobe and Apple products and they have created visual effects for hundreds of feature films, commercials and television shows, achieving three Emmy Awards.
EZ Mask is capable of extracting almost any object in an image, even when those objects have hair detail, reflections or smoke.
To begin a mask in Adobe Photoshop, I load my image, double click the background layer to unlock it and add a layer mask which shows up to the right of the image on the layers pallet (image 1 inset). From the Filters menu, I choose EZ Mask and the image is loaded into the EZ Mask application. EZ Mask creates the mask using a Trimap, which is a pre-segmented image consisting of a foreground, background and unknown. I define the areas to keep by using the left mouse button to draw straight lines (green). Next, I draw lines in the areas I don't want using the right mouse button (red).
Once EZ Mask is done processing, the mask will be displayed with various viewing options that can be toggled, including vertical and horizontal split comparisons. Additional tools are available to adjust and refine foreground areas that might be missing, however in the example I've provided, I used the mask created using just the red and green lines I initially drew without any fine-tuning of the mask. The entire masking process took me less than two minutes from start to finish!
EZ Mask has many preferences that can be changed, including Color Management Control, Edge Color Estimation, De-artifact and Spill Suppression. The included PDF documentation is well written with multiple examples and step-by-step instructions. Within ten minutes of following the instructions, I was comfortable using EZ Mask for my first project (attached images). Because of its ease of use, EZ Mask is a great tool for for both professional designers and amateurs that do only occasional masking. I highly recommend EZ Mask from Digital Film Tools.
