Previously, I was a fan of Vegas. With version 9, I am an even bigger fan. It amazes me how Sony Creative Software continues to improve on such a great product.

For those not familiar with this program, one of the biggest draws is that it has a simiplied workflow all in one software package. There is no need to use multiple programs to edit audio, edit video and add amazing special effects. All can be found in one package rather than breaking each function into separate packages as with Adobe’s Creative Suite. Everything fits nicely together. Vegas Pro 9 easily meets the needs of smaller production firms and the prosumer.

Let’s talk about some of the features to Vegas Pro 9:

Importing from Camcorders – In the latest version, Sony has improved the capabilities of importing footage from AVCHD files. Personally, I own a Sony camcorder and Vegas Pro 9 works flawlessly with it. However, almost any camcorder will work.
Scripting Features – If you are inclined to programming, the new version actually enables you to automate your workflow even further by enabling you to program custom scripts. One caveat though, you’ll probably need experience with programming to take full advantage of the scripting capabilities.
More Support for Professionals - Vegas Pro 9 now natively supports the newest professional camcorder formats including XDCAM EX and RED. It also includes support for still images greater than one gigapixel in resolution. This is a bonus because such large still images are sometimes difficult to deal with, even in programs like Adobe Photoshop.
Blu-Ray DVD Authoring – Now that Blu-Ray is all the rage, you really need a program that can help you create that type of output. Sony accomplishes this with the accompanying DVD Architect Pro. Create your timeslines and complete your editing in Vegas Pro 9, then build it in Dvd Architect Pro.
New Lighting Effects and Filters – The previous version of Vegas Pro already had an impressive lineup of lighting effects and filters. In the new version, Sony takes it farther with six new ones. These effects benefit both the professional, as well as, the amateur video enthusiast. They include: glint, rays, defocus, starburst, soft contrast and fill light. You now have over 190 customizeable effects!
Full Support for Audio – Vegas Pro now includes 5.1 surround sound track to projects. So, now you have the dynamic video as well as the audio to match.
Improved Customizeable Interface – Another advantage of Vegas Pro 9 is the customizeable interface. It’s wonderful to be able to customize your workspace based on the type of work you are doing. Included in the new interface is the new Device Explorer window which enables you to browse, preview and select media directly from your camcorder. This works great, especially if you have a Sony camcorder.

Although it is a separate program and purchase, I would be remiss not to mention the new VASST Vegas Pro Production Assistant 1.0 . This new program enables you to improve your workflow productivity tool for automating repetitive tasks and production processes outside of the Vegas Pro 9 program.

One example for using this new program is to create projects based on previously created project templates from Vegas 9 Pro. You simply fire up VASST Vegas Pro Production Assistant 1.0 and run the template. Then, just replace the slugs (that you previously put in place in the template in Vegas 9 Pro) with your desired media and batta bing!.

Last, but not least, I do want to mention that for the new users Sony has some great step-by-step tutorials available. Those tutorials along with the comprehensive help system sound provide you with all the assistance you need to get up and running as quickly as possible.

Before you step out and purchase your new copy of Sony Vegas Pro 9, be sure to check your computer to ensure that it meets these minimum requirements:

Operating System: Windows XP SP2 (32-bit), Windows Vista (32 / 64-bit) or Windows 7 (32 / 64-bit)
RAM: 1 GB available
HD: 200MB

Again, keep in mind the above requirements are the minimum. Ideally, having as much RAM and HD space available is a plus, due to the file size of some projects.

Summary – Sony Vegas Pro 9 is definitely a must-have for the amateur and professional videographer. A simiplified workflow, plus many features found in much more expensive professional video software are found within.
